Pamela Spurvey, a former victim of sexual exploitation, now teaches classes in personal finance and she tells us about her difficult past and how it brought her to her current career. Speaking of her first savings and purchase of a dryer she says: “ That wouldn’t seem important to other people, but it was really important to me ”, “ When I got it in my house, I snuck downstairs and watched it go round and round. I didn’t think it was something possible for me to own — it was the most expensive thing in my house. ”, “ I had power over my own money. ”. At an event in her community Survey spoke about the Financial Goal Calculator , a free interactive online tool that allows people of all ages to plan their way out of debt and save for retirement and other goals. She says “ It does all calculations, including projections of all interest earned and owed, and produces a monthly payment or contribution plan for you to follow ”. Lucie Tedesco who is a chair of the Financial Consumer agency of Canada, which developed this online tool, shares the intent behind creating it “ Financial literacy is important at every stage of your life, from childhood when you learn about the value of money and importance of saving and planning, to adulthood when you’re buying your first home and planning to start a family, to your senior years when it’s really crucial to make sure you have financial resources in place to realize your financial plans, let alone your dreams”.
