Gender Advertising Remixer is an online app that allows you to recombine video from ads directed at boys with audio from ads directed at girls (and viceversa): the result are hilarious and insightful 30-seconds mash-ups which give us an evidence of how marketing conveys gender stereotypes.
From the choice of colors and music to the contents of ads, it becomes clear that advertising language embeds stereotypical set of social values about gender differences between male and female roles.
The goal of the Gendered Advertising Remixer Project is to help youth to understand and deconstruct in a playful way the gendered messages of advertising. As the founder of the project, Jonathan McIntosh , explains: "remix video can be a fantastic way to combine critical media literacy, technical skills and creative play".
What are you waiting, it's now time to remix!
