On October 11th the European Commission started a consultation with consumers on how to strengthen consumer protection across borders. In the press release, Neven Mimica, European Commissioner for Consumer Policy, expressed personally his desire to hear from consumers, shop owners and businesses how to strengthen consumer protection across the EU. The feedback received will serve to reinforce the Commission’s on-going work to improve the pan-European network of consumer protection enforcement bodies, which ensures that people in all states of the EU benefit from the same rights regardless of their origin or that of the product purchased. The specific issues in the consultation are: what means of consultation and enforcement do national authorities need in order to collaborate across the EU, what sanctions are appropriate to deter infringement, and how to deal best with breaches of the rules perpetrated in several countries by the same offender. The consultation can be accessed online and is open until January 31st, 2014.
