Androulla Vassiliou, European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth, visited on Monday “Cinekid”, the world’s largest media festival for children: “More needs to be done to encourage media literacy among children.” According to the Commissioner the ability to understand and evaluate interactive media, newspapers, films, images and others is a fundamental competence in today’s knowledge based economy. The festival will also provide an excellent opportunity to raise awareness of the new Creative Europe program, which will start from next year and will dispose with a budget of €1.46 billion for a duration of seven years. The program will provide funding for the development and distribution of European films and other initiatives in the cultural sector. Adroulla Vassilou explains that one of the Commission’s priorities will be to finance films aimed at children. Alongside this, it will support excellent media and film literacy projects.
